Widespread in South America, from Argentina in the south to Colombia in the north. It is more of a scrambler than a climber, but can be coaxed up to three or four feet on netting. Also looks good trailing downwards, making it a good container plant.
In cultivation Lathyrus nervosus likes cool summers and some protection from excessive winter wet. In its native habitat it is reputed to be a fairly short lived perennial, and so may need replacing every few years, although our stock plants are over 10 years old.
A February sowing will give plants which flower from mid June under glass - about 18 weeks from seed to first flower.
Lathyrus nervosus is quite distinct from Lathyrus magellanicus which has quite different leaves and flowers. L. magellanicus is not currently in cultivation in the UK.
